i heart neon neon

i am the first to admit that i often pick up on cool things
after the "new and hot" ship has long sailed.
i live in nh, so i feel like i have an legitimate excuse for being behind.
maybe someday in the not-too-distant future, when i move to the big city
(dc or nyc . . . i'm keeping my options open),
i will be a little more hip than i am now.
until then, i will settle for "discovering" cool things a year behind everyone else.
so . . . drumroll . . . for today's revelation:
i am totally digging the styling in this video . . .
especially cate le bon's haircut.
she is exceptionally lovely.
if hair crushes exists, this is one.
(for everyone panicking that i'm going to chop the locks again,
rest assured, i'm not going to . . . yet.)

a letter to future-husband

dear future-husband,
i realize that i probably will ask for a lot before and after we are married.
but this one thing really means a ton to me . . . so i am hoping that if i bake you enough cupcakes, brownies and chocolate chip cookies, never pout when you want to hang with your boys instead of me and stick to a strict shopping budget for the entirety of our marriage, you will let me have it.
someday, when we settle into our first cute-but-slightly-run-down apartment, can we have a door like this?
via www.menstyle.fr
thanks, hunny. you really are fabulous.
big hugs and kisses,
abby
p.s. i will settle for red if the pink is really going to kill you.
{HAPPY WEEKEND, EVERYONE!}

something to brighten your gloomy day . . .

isn't this just to die for?
watching this got me to thinking . . .
women in my family are known for practicality.
for making something out of practically nothing.
for scrimping by during lean times.
when i was a child, my parents fought
financial impossibilities to keep
my mother at home
with my siblings and me.
to curb expenses, mom handmade most of my wardrobe.
hand embroidered t-shirts.
lovingly sewn dresses and jumpers.
socks adorned with ruffles and bows.
headbands and scrunchies created
to coordinate with entire ensembles.
my mother, the forever bargain shopper,
set me out to school looking like an 80's
(albeit an innocent 80's) princess
for just dollars an outfit.
she will always tell people how my 1st grade
teacher asked her what boutique
she shopped for me.
things are a little different today.
i don't feel the necessity to
create my own clothes-
{we do this now for 'entertainment' purposes alone}.
my spring/summer closet is overstuffed
with garments, shoes and accessories
{fall/winter is in the attic}.
the assortment is a far cry from
my elementary school days.
a few vintage pieces
{including one fabulous leather box camera bag}.
typical JCrew staples.
a Target steal here and there.
an almost unholy number of under-worn,
under-appreciated party dresses.
{gasp} my sparkly betsey johnson
still has the tags attached.
still, i will always appreciate my resourceful,
inventive mother.
she never let her little girl feel
she was worthy of any less than Chanel.
and while the little Chanel flicks
always thrill the not-so sophisticated
fashionista inside me,
i still prefer my mother's magic.

blustery wednesday

don't you just love summer?
it's raining today.
it's only a little over 50 degrees outside.
but i was at the beach twice this holiday weekend.
that makes up for today's gloominess.
just a little.
only 2 more work days this week.
----
happy wednesday!

birthday musings

i stumbled upon this lovely little photo on one of my favorite blogs, english muse.
it reminded me an awful lot of a certain album cover
(i totally got hooked on new order during my 'i want to be molly ringwald' phase):
thank you, girls, for the cutest birthday surprise on harry potter night.
the goblet of fire has never been so much fun!
i was honored that bestest v made her first attempt at
fondant on my cupcakes--- beautiful, no?
fireworks in manch this weekend. gotta love it.

happy weekend!

yesterday was simply the most wonderful day off.
the beach was gorgeous --- not a cloud in the sky, warm breezes and chilly ocean waves.
however, i am a lil' crispy today (yes, i DID use sunscreen)!
speaaaaking of rye, check out the pic recently posted by my uncle scott.
circa 1997 (or somewhere around there) with dear cousin erin.
check out the 'sugar' geisha tee!!!
i recently found this dress (can't remember which site- sorry!!!) and fell in love with it. not very practical, though. sadness.
maybe these are a little more realistic . . .
(thank, jcrew, for always making the most delightful things to wear).
i love that today is saturday and i am already relaxed. yay for long weekends!
sister and i have a date at the health food store, library and picnic in the park. i am looking forward to this.
and then --- harry potter night II with my lovely church ladies. i am making my famous beer beans.
hurray for lovely friends and family!

sister dates

welcome home, sister!
after a long semester at college in FL, sister is back in NH for the summer. she is one of my best friends and i hate when we are apart. now we are back together and the sisterly mischief can begin.
we celebrate her return with saturday errands, roasted red pepper and mozzarella cheese pizza, pedicures and "because i said so." i love when we are together.

proposals

a proposal is a tricky thing. every girl thinks hers was amazing and every guy sweats it out, hoping he will blow her mind and get a "yes," in return.
i've heard many a good tale about fantastical proposals. i can say this without bias because i have never been proposed to and therefor do not harbor any opinion that my own was, in fact, the best in the history of man and womankind (which, by the way, it will be).
here are a few examples:
my best friend from college surprised his girlfriend in Paris before their planned rendezvous in Istanbul. He got down on one knee after hotel staff helped him sneak into her hotel room.

a girl friend from church was proposed to by her now husband at a gourmet restaurant on a tropical island while on family vacation. the ring came out with the dessert tray.

my ex-boyfriend just proposed to his now fiance by arranging with her boss to have her sent to their local airport for a "work meeting." he met her, on one knee, at the top of the airport escalator. and then they went on vacation in Vegas. according to him, he packed her suitcase perfectly.

i watched my two friends become engaged as we toured a private villa on the island of Carpi. he asked her to be his wife in front of our 25+ classmates (we were in college at the time) and Russian professor in the confines of a huge garden and breathing Italian sea air.

(thanks to le love for all of the beautiful pictures - they help me remember how much fun it is to be in love)

but i read my favorite of all these stories today . . .

a surprise proposal in the forest . . . how precious is that (future husband, find inspiration here). check out the rest of the story on smitten.

i'm always learning that it really is a small world

most random thing EVER (and story of my life):
so, about a month ago, v recommended that i check out this
online shop (sarahseven).
today, i was lusting after her dresses on her etsy page before going to my church leadership meeting. decided to check out a jewelry page noted by said designer (what are the chances she will point me towards jewelry cravings? likely . . . ).
ANYWAY- i begin to check out the page and CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??

Make Pie Not War (click the photo to go to the site) designed this necklace to raise money for Faceless International (the group i went to India with in December) --- maybe you think this is nothing crazy, but i LOVE things like this.

they remind me that God and Jesus are real and in everything,

every

single

day.

----

not only that, but . . .

today brought an unexpected find . . . these cute glass jars were in the leftover pile from a church rummage sale.
an unjust travesty, if you ask me.
i bought the set for $2.00, even though the church lady said i could have them for free. it didn't feel right to take them for nothing. it is a church, after all.
sheesh.
a little soap and water and they are now good as new. they totally match the kitchen that i don't have yet. now i just have to find something to put in them . . .

lazy lazy lazy lazy

i took the day off from work today to do nothing (a little comp-time for working every weekend except one this month).
i love lazy days and don't often have them --- i did squeeze in 4 loads of laundry and a trip to the public library.
i love this image. . . irving penn's 'summer sleep.'
this was me today.
except with a spring breeze.

Sci-Fi and family weekend

happy mother's day! mom, you are beautiful inside and out. if i end up half the mother to my children that you are to me,
it will be a mighty great thing.
------------------
brother gabe and i went to see star trek this weekend.
it was pretty darn cool.
annnnnd . . . i definitely have a nerd crush on mr. spock. what can a girl say?
i also had the girls over for our first ever Harry Potter Marathon.
hugely successful- loads of fun to be had by all. reasons my friends are fabulous:
1) we decorated my apartment like Hogwarts
2) amazing meal 3) grown-up women snuggling in my living room whilst watching children's movies.

Adventures of Bestest & Abs, Part Un

i just had the most fabulous saturday.
first, this greeted me next to my car this morning.

i am allergic to pollen but the chartreuse on the pavement made me want to wear it.

then, bestest and i had breakfast at jewell & the beanstalk. i ate organic carrot and whole wheat pancakes and super-awesome coffee.

this little place is seriously my new fave. it's so quirky and cute- lots of natural light, flowers, and funky mismatched furniture. plus, the business is family run and supports tons of local NH artists.
not to mention, the food is way yummy.
but the really cool part of today is that we went YARDSALE-ING!!!!
----------------

holy

cow.

----------------

this is definitely my newly discovered love. recycling and shopping all in one --- a match made in heaven. and, c'mon, don't we all love retro goodies for a dollar????
this adventure was in pursuit of supplies for a very special surprise project (top secret- shhh!).
all i can say is we found the most adorable treasures.

totally in love with the new vintage pins i bought from some cute little old ladies. they sold them to me for a whopping 50 cents.

the only sad part about today was learning that my digital cameras need to be recharged and my SLR is ill with something other than H1N1 (hence the many camera phone pix).

wishes for a delightful weekend to all.
