where we come from, who we come from

do you recognize the people looking back at you

from the black and white photographs

that crowd your grandmother's bookshelves?

who were your parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents

before you were around?

why does everyone in your family cling to the same

sayings and catch phrases?

when did your traditions begin?

i've been thinking a lot about this lately . . .

about the stories of the people in my family

and the heritage of their life experiences that have shaped

the person i am today.

do i know where i come from?

do i know who i come from?

i'm not sure i'm able to answer either of those two questions . . .

but i can say that there is no time like the present

to begin to find out.
